Credit Card Fraud
Credit card fraud is a growing problem, will chip and pin help save us!
There are many different ways in which a criminal can commit credit card fraud, to name just a few;
- Discarded receipts.
- Taking an imprint when your card is out of sight (called skimming)
- Telephone transactions during which your card details are taken.
Credit card fraud is costing card holders and issuers hundreds of millions of pounds each year and whilst it’s not always possible to avoid fraud, there are a few basic measures you can employ to reduce your risk of being a victim of credit card fraud.
- Guard your card, and don’t let it out of your sight when making a transaction.
- Carefully dispose of receipts and statements, and study your transactions for anomalies.
- Never write down your PIN or disclose it to anyone.
- When at a cash machine be wary of people who may be looking over your shoulder and don’t allow yourself to be distracted by someone attempting to talk to you.
To fight credit card fraud, UK banks are introducing a system by which all card holders will use a PIN (personal identification number) to effect their transactions rather than just a signature.
